#003 Oh, The Places You'll Go College Scholarship

Award:  One $5,000 scholarship

Deadline:  Postmarked by February 15, 2010

Description:  Students are asked to write an essay on the following topic:  Dr. Seuss's Oh, the Places You'll Go! delivers an important message about the chances and the troubles that life presents.  Thinking about the book Oh, The Places You'll Go!, what kinds of opportunities and challenges do you think your education will present in the future?  Essays should be typed, double-spaced and no longer than one page (500 words) with a minimum font of 12 points.

#004 Gates Millennium Scholars

Sponsor:  Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Deadline:  January 11, 2010

Qualifications:  (1) African American, American Indian, Asian Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American; (2) citizen/legal permanent resident or national of the United States; (3) a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale; (4) entering a US accredited college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking freshman in the fall of 2004; (5) demonstration of leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities; and (6) meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria.

#005 Burger King Scholars

Deadline:  February 1, 2010

Award:  $1,000

Requirements:  at least a C average; work an average of 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year; participate in community service and/or co-curricular activities; demonstrate financial need; plan to enroll in an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or technical school no later than Fall 2010.

#007 The Society of Professional Women in Petroleum Scholarship

Deadline:  February 1, 2010

Qualifications: All applicants must be female and must plan to attend a Texas college or university.  Scholarships are awarded based on academic standing, financial need, extracurricular/community involvement, and the content of the essay.  Applications must be typewritten in the application form.

#008 The Goss-Michael Foundation Scholarship for Art Students in Texas

Deadline:  March 31, 2010

Amount:  $5000

Description:  The Goss-Michael Foundation is offering a scholarship opportunity to all Texas high school graduating seniors who would like to pursue a college education in visual arts. Selection is based on artisitic achievement, scholastic achievement, school and community participation, and leadership.  Completed application includes:  1) application; 2) high school transcript; 3) 1,000 word essay on "Why I deserve this Scholarship"; 4) Artist's statement; and 5) CD of 10 original works.  Requirements:  Applicants must be a graduating senior in Texas and must pursue a fine arts degree.

#009 Ron Brown Scholar Program

Deadline:  January 9, 2010

Description:  The Ron Brown Scholar Program seeks to award scholarships to academically talented, highly motivated African American students.  Applicants must be African American and be citizens or permanent residents of the US.  Applicants should excel academically, show exceptional leadership potential and make an impact on their community through service to others.

#009 Society of Exploration Geophysicists

Deadline:  March 1, 2010

Description:  The SEG Foundation is offering scholarships to students who intend to pursue a college curriculum directed toward a career in applied geophysics or a closely related field.  General requirements:  1) A student must intend to pursue a college curriculum directed toward a career in applied geophysics or a closely related field; and 2) planning to enter college next fall.

#010 USA/MAES Pre-Engineering Scholarship

Description:  United Space Alliance (USA) and the Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists (MAES) are awarding several scholarships to students in the Houston area.  To be eligible, applicants must:  1) Be an ethnic minority (African American, American Indian, Asian, Hispanic or Pacific Islander; 2) Intend to pursue a college degree in engineering,  mathematics, or science; 3) Be well-rounded with involvement in academic and extracurricular activities; and 4) Have a minimum GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale.

#011 KFC Colonel's Scholars Program

Deadline:  February 10, 2010

Description:  The KFC Colonel's Scholars Program is dedicated to assisting students with financial need who plan to pursue a bachelor's degree at a public institution within their legal state of residence.  To qualify, a student must be:  1) graduating from high school this academic year; 2) Maintaining a minimum high school cumulative GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale; 3) Enrolling in a public, in-state college or university; 4) Pursuing a bachelor's degree; and 5) A US citizen or permanent resident.

#015 The AXA Achievement Scholarship

Sponsor:  AXA Foundation in association with US News and World Report

Deadline:  December 15, 2010

Description:  The AXA Achievement Scholarship, in association with U.S. News & World Report and managed by Scholarship America, provides $670,000 in annual scholarships to high school seniors throughout the nation. Fifty-two (52) scholarship recipients, known as AXA Achievers, will be selected – one from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. These recipients will receive one-time scholarships of $10,000 each. Ten (10) AXA Achievers will be selected as national recipients from the pool of 52, earning an additional one-time scholarship of $15,000, a computer and the offer of an internship at an AXA office.

#018 Houston Hispanic Forum

Deadline:  Postmarked by November 20, 2009

Qualifications:  (1)  Applicants must have a B or better grade average as indicated on the transcript; (2) must have participated or exhibited leadership in school activities; (3) have volunteered in community activities, such as social agencies, political campaigns, church groups, or school sponsored community work; (4) intend to be enrolled as a full-time college/university student and maintain a 2.0 GPA; and (5) scholarship winners must be present at Career and Education Day on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

#006 University of Texas-Austin:  Texas Exes-Houston Chapter

Deadline:  February 1, 2010

Description:  The Houston Chapter of the Texas Exes will award more than 15 one time scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 and 6 multi-year endowment awards ranging from $2,000 to $4,000 per year to outstanding high school seniors from the Houston area who will attend UT-Austin.  To be eligible, a graduating senior must receive and accept admission to UT-Austin and rank in the 25% of the class.

#012 Baylor University Carr P. Collins Scholars Program

Deadline:  Postmarked by January 31, 2010

Description:  Baylor University annually awards scholarships through the Carr P. Collins Scholars Program to students who have demonstrated leadership through service.  To be considered, applicants must :  1) meet all university requirements for unconditional admission; 2) have a minimum combined SAT of 1250 (Critical Reading and Math) or a minimum of 28 on the ACT; 3) be a resident of the state of Texas for at least one year; and 4) be in the top 25% of the graduating class.

#013 The Eugene McDermott Scholars Program at the University of Texas in Dallas

Deadline:  December 1, 2009

Description:  The McDermott Scholars Program is an extensive award honoring top students.  Typical McDermott Scholars have ACT/SAT scores in the 97th percentile, are in the top 2% of their class, are campus leaders, and community volunteers.  The McDermott Scholars award includes, year-round for four years, tuition and fees, annual book stipend, travel home and back twice per year for out-of-town Scholars, a monthly stipend, state-wide and national travel associated with curricular activities, and study abroad.

#016 Texas A&M University Regents' Scholarships

Deadline:  Students must apply to TAMU using the ApplyTexas application by January 15, 2010.  A separate application is not required.

Description:  TAMU will offer the Regents' Scholarship to 600 incoming freshmen in the fall of 2008.  Criteria:  1) must be a First Generation college attendee (neither parent has earned a bachelor's degree); and 2) total family income is less than $40,000.  For more information, go to:  https://scholarships.tamu.edu/display.asp?mainkey=367&pop=2&disp=2.

 

#017 Academic Excellence Award at Stephen F. Austin State University

Deadline:  February 1, 2010

Description:  The Academic Excellence Award scholarship is awarded to newly admitted students in the top 10% of their graduating class or those in the top 25% with an 1100 SAT (Critical Reading and Math only) or 24 ACT (not including writing).

Amount:  $3,000 per year (renewable)
