Westchester Fencing Club

The sport of Fencing is almost as old as civilization itself.  Egyptian hieroglyphics dating back to 1,200 B.C. depict  many aspects of modern fencing, such as the use of blunted swords, chest protectors, and masks.  Since then it has developed into an exciting sport that is completely safe for all ages. To be a successful fencer, one must focus on  physical strength as well as mental awareness.

Fencing is often described as "Physical Chess" since it forces the fencer to concentrate on developing a plan for a sequence of actions to score a point.  Then, the fencer must conduct these actions, focusing on form, and ability, while at the same time monitoring their opponent to ensure that an unexpected action has not taken place. For the experienced fencer, the above occurs in an instant. This is called a "fraise" which generally ends with a point scored for either of the two competitors. Once a fraise is completed, it is soon followed by another, until 15 points are reached by one of the two fencers. This quick, sequence of actions and reactions makes for a very exciting, physically demanding, and mentally challenging sport.

Another interesting aspect to the sport are the traditions that come along with it.  It requires the participants to conduct themselves in a respectful, chivalric manner. All fencers are required to salute their opponent and director at the beginning of each bout. Once a bout is concluded both fencers MUST shake hands with each other and the director. In addition, any un-sportsman like conduct by either a participant or observer is strictly forbidden and generally carries stiff consequences.  The uniforms worn by fencers and masters must also conform to traditions. Even the different types of fencing (their are three) come from traditional forms of swordplay.

One more aspect that I feel must be mentioned, is safety.  Even though you are using swords, and the basic object is to strike a blow that would kill your opponent in a real life sword fight, fencing is one of the safest sports for someone to participate in.  The risk of injury is VERY low provided you wear the correct protective equipment, and stretch before you fence. Far more people get hurt everyday through the normal playing of sports such as soccer, football, and lacrosse, then any ever would with fencing.  The safety combined with the excitement makes fencing the ideal sport for all ages.

So you maybe asking yourself how hard is it? The truth is, not very. Yes, it is physical. You will get a great work out. Complex? To some, like any sport it requires practice. However, it does not take long to get the hang of it.  I have had students take their first lesson in September, and compete for the first time in April and either place well, or win.  The key is, just to do it often, and that is the goal of the Westchester Club. We want to provide a forum that is inexpensive, so that more fencers can participate and participate frequently. Come out and join us! We hope to see you soon!
