GENERAL INFORMATION<= /p>

The rules and regulat= ions supplied in this addendum do not circumvent the district handbook. It is required that parents and students read the 2009 – 2010

Student/Parent Handbo= ok and sign and return the parent responsibility form included in the SBISD Student/Parent Handbook.

ATTEND= ANCE

School attendance is essential for student success. Texas law requires students to attend 90% = of the semester. At the secondary level, attendance is taken for each

c= lass period. Students who attend less than 90% will lose class credit regardless of the grade unless the Attendance Committee determines extenuating

c= ircumstances and/or the student h= as successfully completed an alternative learning assignment. Parents will be notified by letter when a student is in danger of

l= osing credit and when cred= it is lost. When a student is absent from school a parent/guardian should contact the attendance office (713-251-1839) after 8:30 am

and explain why the stud= ent is absent. Upon return to school, bring a written statement signed by parent/guardian sta= ting the reason for the absence. Present the

s= tatement to the office at = least 15 minutes prior to the first class period. If a student does not arr= ive in time to receive an admit and does not get to class before <= /span>

t= he bell, he or she will= be considered tardy and issued a detention.

DISTRI= BUTION OF PRINTED MATERIAL ON CAMPUS

Circulars, advertisem= ents, notices, newspapers, or similar material may not be distributed on the ca= mpus without prior permission of the director. Posters

advertising club meetings, etc.,= must be signed by the director or an assistant director before being posted.

DRUG A= ND ALCOHOL USE

Westchester Academy h= as a zero-tolerance policy against students using or possessing drugs and/or alcohol at school or school-related functions. Students caught

u= sing or possessing drugs/alcohol will be subject to severe administrative consequences that = will include mandatory AEP placement. These students may also be

s= ubject to legal action. = In accordance with district policy, students in leadership positions will be held to a higher standard than their peers and may be relieved

of their positions for documented drug and/or alcohol use in or out of school.

DRUG-S= NIFFING CANINES

SBISD Police periodic= ally utilize drug-sniffing dogs to uncover contraband on school campuses. Any indication by a drug-sniffing dog that contraband is

p= resent on school property o= r in an automobile shall be reasonable cause for further search by school officials.

EMERGENCY SITUATIONS

Westchester Academy, = with the support of SBISD Police Department, has procedures in place to respon= d to a variety of emergency situations. In some

t= hreatening situations, students= and staff will be directed to evacuate the building. In other threatening situations, the best response will be to secure students and <= /span>

s= taff in-place (i.e., a Shelter-In-Place response). In the event that an emergency situation arises wherein SBISD police direct us to initiate a Shelter-In-Place

response, individuals will NO= T be allowed to enter or leave campus for any reason whatsoever. Parents will not be allowed to pick up their students from campus

u= ntil the emergency situat= ion has ended and the police declare the campus safe again.=

GRADE REPORTS

Students will be issu= ed a grade report about every three weeks. Progress Reports and Repo= rt Cards will be issued for each six-week period. If parents do not rece= ive

g= rade reports, please cont= act the office. Parents are also encouraged to use the Parent Portal on the S= BISD web site to monitor grades as well. (Parents may pick up

t= heir Parent Portal passwo= rd by presenting their ID at the office.)

HALL PASSES

A hall pass form will= be included in this agenda. If students find it necessary to leave class or = are acting on behalf of a teacher, they must obtain a hall pass from the

t= eacher indicating permissio= n to be out of class. Student aides will wear ID tags when performing student = aide duties.

HEALTH

= Students who become i= ll or injured during school hours must= report to the nurse’s office. Arrangements will be made for students if it becomes necessary for them

t= o leave school because= of illness or accident. Parents of students with communicable diseases are a= sked to notify the school nurse in order to avoid further

c= ontamination. A current emergency health card must be on file in the nurse’s office at all times. Ensure the nurse has your current home phone, parents’ work

p= hone(s) and any other emerge= ncy numbers, cell phones or pager numbers. Parents must request in writing (f= orm provided by the school) for prescription and

n= on-prescription medicines to be disp= ensed at school. Prescription medicines at school must be in original container labeled by the pharmacy. All medicines must

= be left in = the nurse’s office.

I.D. BADGES

All secondary student= s in SBISD are required to carry school-issued I.D. badges. It will be the student’s responsibility to have the badge on his/her person at

a= ll times and the studen= t will be required to produce it upon demand of any faculty or staff member. Students will be charged a fee to replace lost or damaged badges.

LEAVING SCHOOL DURING SCHOOL HOURS

Students may leave the school campus if they have a written valid reason signed by parent/guardi= an. Students must sign out in the office. Any student who leaves

campus without signing out = at time of departure will be counted as truant and disciplinary action will = be taken.

LOCKERS

Lockers are the prope= rty of the school, and each student will be assigned a specific locker. Students= may not share lockers with another student. Locker assignments

a= re not to be changed wi= thout permission of your assistant director. The school is not responsible f= or items lost from these lockers. Please do NOT bring valuable

items with you to health f= itness as gym lockers are shared.

LOST AND FOUND

The lost and found ar= ea is located in each office.

MAKE-UP WORK

Students who miss wor= k in class due to an excused absence are permitted to make up the work. When a student is absent due to extra-curricular activities, work

d= ue on that day of absen= ce will be due no later than the day upon the student’s return to school. Th= is includes a pre-assigned test. Some teachers may require work <= /span>

t= o be turned in before = the student leaves for the extra-curricular activity.

RADIOS, TAPES, CD PLAYERS, PAGERS, CELL PHONES<= /b>

Radios, CDs, and other electronic devises are NOT permitted in the classroom unless the teacher = has given the student/class permission to have these items in

c= lass. The use of cell pho= nes and pagers is NOT allowed during school hours (except during the student’s lunch period). A student may be in possession of a cell

phone or pager during the = school day ONLY if the device is turned OFF AND is out of sight. For safety reasons, students are allowed to use such

t= elecommunication devices before schoo= l, after school, and at other school–related events. Students in violation of this policy will have their telecommunications

d= evices confiscated AND must= serve a detention. Phones will be returned to a parent or guardian beginning the first business day AFTER the detention is

s= erved. School personnel wi= ll NOT be responsible for the items confiscated. Additional violations of this policy by the student will result in increasingly severe

c= onsequences.

SCHOOL HOURS

Regular school hours = are 7:45 am to 3:05 pm. Students arriving after 7:45 am should report to the office and sign in. Students needing to leave school early must

p= resent a written request fo= r an early dismissal before school begins. All students leaving or returning to campus must sign in at the office.

TARDIES AND DETENTIONS

Students are expected= to be physically present in the classroom with all materials ready to work at t= he beginning of every period. Students tardy to class will

b= e assigned a detention= . Excessive tardies and/or persistent failure to serve as= signed detentions will result in more serious disciplinary consequences.

TEA PROOF OF ENROLLMENT FORM

This form provides re= quired documentation of enrollment status/attendance for a student applying for = an instruction permit or applying or renewing a license to=

o= perate a motor vehicle. Thi= s form may be obtained in the registrar’s office before or after school, but not during class time. This form can only be issued if the =

student has met the 90% atte= ndance requirement in the previous school semester, and is in good standing (cle= ar of detentions, owes no monies, etc.). It will take

24 hours to receive t= he form after the student has signed up.

TELEPH= ONE

The courtesy phone in each office area is for student emergency use only.

TEXTBO= OKS

All textbooks are the property of the state of Texas. Students are required by law to keep a cover on their textbooks= . Students are held responsible for lost or damaged

books. A student’s scholas= tic record will not be released until his/her textbook record is clear. If a student pays for a lost textbook and finds it before the end of school,

a refund may be obtain= ed. (Please see the textbook clerk, Jessica Gonzales, in the admissions offic= e.) The book and the receipt of payment must be presented at the

time the refund request is made.

TRANSP= ORTATION

Bus transportation is available to all students residing in SBISD. Tardies incurred= due to car trouble, weather or traffic issues will be unexcused. Buses ar= e an extension

of the school and rules= of conduct will be observed and enforced. Bus transportation is a privile= ge which can be taken away for misbehavior on the bus.=

TUTORI= AL SESSIONS

Tutoring sessions are offered by all teachers. Please check with your teachers for the specific day(s) and times for the= ir tutorial sessions.

VIDEO SURVEILLANCE

The Texas Education Code, Section 26.009(b), authorizes schools to videotape students for purposes of safety, including the maintenance of order and discipline in

common<= span style=3D'font-size:9.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt'> areas of the buildin= g and on school buses. Westchester Academy’s video surveillance system monitors= all common areas of the campus including parking lots.

Whenever appropriate, the video surveillance system will be used as evidence against students who commit infractions of the SBISD Student Code of Conduct and/or

are involved in illegal activities. WAIS students may also be monitored on SBISD school buses.

VISITO= RS

Visitors are NOT allowed without prior approval from the school administration. Approval will be granted only in rare and unusual circumstances.

Ø     &nbs= p; Clothing may not be worn which displays (written or pictured) obs= cene or distasteful slogans, advertises tobacco, drugs, alcoholic <= /span>

Ø     &nbs= p; beverages or prohibited substances.

Ø     &nbs= p; Shoes must be worn; however, water/aqua shoes, house shoes or sho= es creating a safety issue are not permitted.*

Ø     &nbs= p; See-through clothing is not permitted.

Ø     &nbs= p; Garments that expose the midriff during normal school activities (i.e. raising your hand) are not acceptable.

Ø     &nbs= p; Shorts must be no shorter than mid-thigh. (Tight-fitting shorts, i.e., Lycra bi= ke shorts are not allowed.)

Ø     &nbs= p; Hair should be clean, neat and well-groomed.

Ø     &nbs= p; Torn, tattered, unhemmed clothing wil= l not be allowed.

Ø     &nbs= p; Pajamas or pajama-like clothing may not be worn at school.

Ø     &nbs= p; Hair color must be a natural color (i.e. no green, pink, blue, et= c.)
