The learning never stops, even during the summer! Students are encouraged to log reading minutes and win grand prizes with the Spring Branch ISD Summer Reading Challenge. 

“By reading throughout the summer students maintain and even improve their reading skills, which leads to greater academic success for the coming school year,” said Lisa Stultz, SBISD director of Library and Media Services. “Participating in the Summer Reading Challenge provides students with a fun and motivating reason to keep reading all summer long!”  

The challenge takes place from June 1 to August 13 and this year’s goal is for each participating student to log at least 1,000 reading minutes by the end of summer. 

Students can log and track their reading minutes through the Beanstack dashboard, which can be accessed through their Clever account. Each week, prize bags filled with books, gift cards, games and other goodies, will be awarded to randomly selected students who logged reading minutes for the week. 

Each student who reaches the 1,000-minute goal by August 13 will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win grand prizes. Additionally, the top five readers, ranked by the number of minutes read, at each school level will be recognized at the August regular board of trustees meeting. 

Samuel Jimenez, a junior at Northbrook High School and 2022 grand prize winner, notes that reading is very important and encourages others to engage in the Summer Reading Challenge. 

“Reading is a skill you use your entire life!” said Samuel. “Reading over the summer helps you to practice your reading skills and expand your vocabulary, plus, it can keep you entertained when you have nothing else to do, especially when school is on break!”

Literacy is a priority in SBISD, not only in early grades but in every grade. Initiatives like the Summer Reading Challenge support a balanced literacy approach, giving students the best opportunity to achieve T-2-4 success and to become lifelong learners always in the pursuit of knowledge.
