Lydia Lee

At Westchester Academy for International Studies (WAIS) in Spring Branch ISD, sixth grader Lydia Lee is grateful that art is a required subject during her first year at the school.

Through her experiences in the class, led by teacher Cindy Cisneros, Lydia has learned a lot about herself and discovered the power of self-expression.

“When I do art, I can express my emotions by putting them into my works,” said Lee. She has drawn inspiration from other artists online and enjoys sharing the experience with friends. “I’ve grown in this class because it helped me notice the emotions and life issues that artists try to portray.”

Her favorite assignment so far was an exploration of radial symmetry. Designs were created around a central point, with shapes and colors radiating outward in repeating, consistent patterns—like spokes on a wheel.

“The repetition, patterns, and experimenting with vivid colors brought a sense of peace while I was working on it,” Lee said. “The symmetry and complexity of the final piece was so satisfying.”

A Creative Incubator

Lydia’s interest in art began at a young age, according to her mother, Diana Lee. At home, Lydia was provided with a variety of creative materials, including watercolors, a sewing machine, embroidery supplies, and sketchpads, as she explored and developed her artistic talents.

As any artist—and mother—knows, it’s important to learn from mistakes, and sometimes those mistakes lead to unexpected discoveries.

“The patience and finding beauty in mistakes are life lessons that Lydia carries with her, wherever she is in life,” said Diana Lee. “Art has become a medium for her to develop her craft and, hopefully, an outlet to express her emotions and struggles.”

Persistence and Determination

Lee credits Ms. Cisneros’ guidance with helping her develop one of the six Core Characteristics of a T-2-4 Graduate identified by Spring Branch ISD: persistence and adaptability.

“She’s encouraged and challenged me to think outside the box,” Lee said of Cisneros. “We adjust and grow from the experiences and people we encounter each day.”

Cisneros has great admiration for Lee’s creativity and determination.

“Lydia is a risk-taker and is willing to try new things,” Cisneros said. “She is determined and always strives to do her best.”

Pride and Joy

Diana Lee takes pride in her daughter’s artistic growth, especially the work Lydia has created in Ms. Cisneros’ class.

“To see your child shine because they’re proud of their work and love creating it truly brings me the most joy,” said Diana Lee.

Middle school is a time of self-discovery, and Lydia seems to be embracing the milestones of this journey through her art. As she reflects on her experiences, she shared this insight: “I am reminded that I can be a light to others if I carry my own light first.”

Thank you, Lydia, for creating art that brings you joy and enriches your community.
